ButterflySCAN protocols

The Basic ID Process:

• Where are you:
  • Geographic location?
  • Habitat?

• What time of year is it?
• General color?
  • Pattern (veins, patches, spots)

• General size?
• Wing outline (regular, jagged, pointed wing apex, tailed, etc.)
• Ventral vs. Dorsal view?
• Flight Pattern and/or Perch position?

 

Protocol details

• Conduct one survey every 2 weeks
  • Walk the same route each time

• Aim to survey for 30-60 minutes
• Survey during good weather, daylight hours (~9AM- 3PM)
• Record # of each species seen
  • You will miss some… don’t sweat it

• Respect residents’ privacy
• Enter data on eButterfly
• Be safe!
• Have Fun!
• Ask questions if you have them!
